but that's not what I meant

but that's not what I meant

that's not what I meant
“I never cared about your skin tone.”
but
it didn’t feel like it.
now it’s over and done.
nah.
from the subtle comments
and the constant judgments
always with the pretense
but,
“I swear, that’s not what I meant.”
you know,
I heard what you said.
I felt it.
you can’t just take it away.
because yeah,
you cared about my skin tone.
now that I see it,
you got nothin’ to say.
can’t even reach out and attempt to atone.
if you reached out,
I’d give you a chance,
but,
it won’t happen
you’re watchin’ the news
hoping and praying things aren’t true.
while I’m sittin here.
readin’ and writin’,
just tryna make it through the day.
cuz,
news flash:
too many people care about my skin tone.
it’s too dark for them.
to you it’s been over and done.
or,
maybe it’s just begun.
nah.
you just see it.
people record it now.
so others can see how
how it is for people with a darker tone.
but…
you never cared.
never tried to understand it.
always said it was so outlandish.
made my feelings invalid.
but.
but.
it’s so much more than just the skin tone.
