Paramedic Mica
As a 22 year old paramedic, it is absolutely terrifying to think that I have the license to save someones life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
At a very young age, I knew I wanted to help people. I never pictured myself as a first responder, but none the less, I was honored to be able to be in such a position. It is definitely not an easy career and not for the light hearted. Its filled with tears, blood and guts. Sounds great, huh? In all honesty, It sucks a lot sometimes. Late nights, changing schedules, and its pretty much always stressful. Don’t get me wrong, though being a first responder can be tough, it has its upsides.
Ever have a patient that absolutely changes your life? I ran a call on an elderly patient that had fallen in their drive way trying to get their trash can to the end of the road for the garbage collectors. We cleaned her up and took her to the hospital incase of a possible head injury. On the drive over, they started to cry and held my hand so tightly that I thought I would lose circulation. They told me that I reminded them of their daughter who had passed away a few years back.
They gave me some life advice and told me that they were proud of me and so thankful for the help. I know it sounds ridiculous, but that simple interaction made my entire day. Its moments like those that remind me of why I love my job. It reminds me of my love of medicine. I am honored to be a first responder, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
