What if ...
It was years before the accident, when I wrote in my little booklet of wishes the next couple of lines:
“So… If in this life really everything is possible, like I believe it is, I simply wish to have the time before I am 30yo, to simply just sit down and really think of what I am doing with this life”
Soon after my 29th birthday, my wish came true in a lot different ways than I imagined it to be. I had a mountain bike accident and since then I have had a lot of time to sit and to think.
Being diagnosed with complete paraplegie sub Th 8, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to do rehabilitation in one of the best hospitals in the world dealing with spinal cord injuries.
I didn’t write much more since then, as fear got in the way: How capable we are? How much power do we actually have over our feelings and thoughts, of which we are simply not aware of?
However, in my humble opinion, we are far from healing SCI. We are just making it possible to live with it …
Why do I think so? It’s pretty simple: many researchers have found out that more than 70% of office workers are either having back or neck problems. Why? Sitting position, of course.
And what is modern medicine doing with someone who just broke their back/neck?
Just a thought…
Ps: before this gets too long, I got to experience the thrill in the ice canal and it was one of my other (silly) wishes I had before the accident. Well, … Guess what? Just a bit more than a year after that MTB accident, I started competing in Para-bobsleighing!
