Back in 2017 I was on a mission to lose weight and get fit. I had joined a gym and I was using the treadmill for my cardio. It was probably my least favorite part of a trip to the gym at that point, but I fought through it.
I had some coworkers mention they were going to run in the Pat’s Run in Tempe that April. I thought what the heck, so I signed up out of the blue. At that point I had never even run more than a couple of miles on a treadmill, much less a 4.2 miles RACE.
Race day came along and I was nervous and scared as hell. I didn’t feel ready for what was in front of me. It isn’t the average 5K sort of race, it was 25k+ runners with TONS of spectators.
I was not only able to finish the race, I managed to run the whole thing with no walking. I was completely shocked to say the least. The energy of being around that many runners and having so many spectators along the route cheering you on was the unbelievable.
The joy and excitement of crossing that finish line changed me forever. I was hooked. I was a runner from that day forward. Since that day, I have since run more 5K races than I can count as well as many half and full marathons. Not only the races, but I also have become a “runstreaker” and recently celebrated my 2 year run streak anniversary.
That simple on a whim decision to sign up for that one race changed the course of my life forever. I will forever be a runner and I couldn’t possibly be more thankful for it.
